Why Are You So Scared
Fear is a normal human emotion. Everyone experiences fear. What one fears and how one responds to fears may seem unique to the individual, but in fact many of us share the same or similar fears. Fears and phobias hold one back from growing and healing, because socially, being afraid implies that one is weak. It’s facing one’s fears, being open about them, that is truly difficult. Who wants to admit they’re afraid of something other’s find utterly benign? But confronting one’s fears helps one step outside of one’s comfort zone and realize they are not as terrifying as they seem. Why Are You So Scared is an installation of posters designed to confront viewers with images and language representative of specific fears: fear of clowns (coulrophobia), fear of needles (trypanophobia), and fear of spiders (arachnophobia). It is when we acknowledge and talk about our fears that they come to have less of a hold on us.
