Eleutherophobia
Limits are everywhere. How much food we can eat, how much weight can we carry, how much money we can afford to spend in a day. Some limits are forced upon us, others we choose. But limits are limits. Designers works with limitations all the time: client demands, timing, budget, etc., not to mention formal constraints. To what degree do limitations inhibit a designer’s creativity? Will the personal flourishes always make their way into one’s design work no matter how limited the brief, timeline, and budget? Eleutherophobia explores the notion of more limitations, less creativity. Using phobias as a subject together with a long list of possible limitations, I designed a series of works—poster, photo, sound, song, gif or video—using a random set of limitations, each produced within the same limited amount of time. The results are genuine and surprising.
