Navigating Two Worlds
Cultural duality is a common experience in Chicago and Bangkok. Being in one city or the other requires navigating between traditional and modern values, customs, and identities. Cultural duality is expressed in similar ways in Chicago and Bangkok, through language, religion, cuisine, art, and entertainment shaped by each city’s historical, social, and cultural fabric. The complex dynamics of globalization, migration, and cultural exchange are driving forces in both cities. Having lived in Chicago and Bangkok I have gained a new perspective of cultural duality. As a designer, I work with the interplay of cultures — Chicago and Bangkok — to explore the linguistic shifts and behavioral nuances that characterize the two cities, and to develop visual language that conveys the similarities and dissimilarities that mark the experience.
