Electrical appliances are essential to our daily lives. The average household has 10.6 appliances. Unfortunately, the proliferation of electrical appliances has resulted in a massive e-waste crisis. According to United Nations University, nearly 12.8 million tons of e-waste is generated from small electrical appliances, of which less than 18% is recycled. The environmental and health risks are significant. Toxic materials, such as lead, zinc, nickel, and chromium from dumped e-waste seeps into the soil and pollutes waterways. Plants, animals, and people are endangered as a result. Appliances are discarded for two main reasons: they stop working or they are outdated. The latter is actually planned for by the manufacturers: it’s called planned obsolescence. Blank is a system that empowers users to repair rather than to replace an appliance. It educates users as they build it, provides them with signifiers about the assembly and disassembly of the product, and allows them to replace or repair the faulty parts instead of dumping the appliance and contributing to even more e-waste.
