Beauty Standards: The Warped Eye of the Beholder
We all know the saying: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This may be true to a certain extent. Truer still—often to detrimental effect—are the beauty standards imposed by one’s cultural background. There is constant pressure to live up to and/or conform to an arbitrary ideal. This happens all over the world. What may be considered a standard of beauty today is subject to change tomorrow. It is not only illogical and demeaning but impossible to hold oneself to a given standard. So why does the pressure to conform prevail? For a designer, the notion of standardization is absurd. Beauty, appearance, aesthetics, form, such concepts cannot be regulated. Beauty Standards: The Warped Eye of the Beholder is a series of interactive posters designed to confront the harmful effect beauty standards can have.
