Plano
Smartphones are an everyday accessory and necessary tool. We use them for practical reasons: communicating, scheduling, working, writing. We also use them for entertainment: gaming, streaming, posting. In the period 2019-22, around the time of the pandemic/lockdown, phone usage went up 39%. In 2021, 248.0 million adults were using phones; in 2022 the number rose to 250.7 million; and as of spring 2023, the number is at 253.3 million. While smartphones are in many ways a godsend, they have also become a fixation, a ‘necessary’ distraction, interrupting social interactions, gobbling up precious time, eating into our productivity, causing accidents. Wherever we lay our phones, we can hardly keep ourselves from picking them up repeatedly, like a bad habit. Plano is a family of unique phone cases that visually transform phones into fantastical objects with an alternative function. It’s plausible that a phone that doesn’t look like or behave like a phone will be less of a distraction. At the very least, these Plano might help restore what’s sorely missing: phone etiquette.
