Reimagining History
A significant portion of the population in the United States is Latino or indigenous and yet these populations are underrepresented in media. This lack of representation perpetuates negative stereotypes and reinforces xenophobic sentiments. How are we to be truly intercultural if we aren’t exposed to the lives and stories of cultures dissimilar to our own? It doesn’t have to be like this and there are so many creative people and designers like me fighting to denaturalize the white default. Fantasy is a good way to communicate progressive ideas without talking down or being pedantic. It is engaging and has the potential to open closed minds. The narrative of America needs to be rewritten and pre-Columbian attitudes need to be changed. Reimagining History invites viewers to rethink America’s history and to engage with the country’s real story through the lens of a fantasy pastiche that combines modern sensibilities and ancient mythologies.
