Blurred Lines
As technology advances, one must remain cognizant of the fact that the ability to discern between the real and the virtual is becoming increasingly difficult. One’s imagination roams freely within the digital realm, often for hours on end. While the real world is quiet at night, the digital world leapfrogs language barriers and time zones in a never-ending 24/7 wormhole of information and entertainment. Uncanny as it is, ridiculous even, real world social norms are sometimes imposed upon the virtual world. For example, some video game characters are modified to appear more ‘appealing’ and less human-like. Nevertheless, blurred lines persist and the difference between one’s online persona and one’s real life identity is blurrier by the day. As a designer with an interest in identity — a decidedly fungible concept — I explored the essence of difference between reality, the online world, and the growing difficulty of telling them apart.
