Jotería: A Game of Pride and Power
Design is a vehicle for change and rebellion. It is a powerful tool that, time and time again, has inspired activism, awareness, expression, and most importantly, social change through both the Gay Liberation Movement and the Chicano Art Movement. With Jotería, I explore the rich historical use of design within these very impactful communities, as well as the lasting impact, through Lotería, a traditional Mexican game of chance, similar to bingo. What better way to learn and connect with culture and history than with a special rendition of a beloved game? This unique version of Lotería brings to life queer and Chicano history through a beautiful deck of cards, each illustrated with a defining characteristic, theme, or motif that represents these movements. Design is a tool—a weapon that was forged from the demand of political and social autonomy. Rooted in the desire for community, acceptance, and affirmation, Jotería aims to contextualize Gay Liberation and Chicano Art by highlighting both the struggles and strengths these disadvantaged yet powerful communities have experienced, as well as the intersectionality between them.
