Borrowed Memories
My memories of life and family in the Philippines are borrowed from stories I’ve been told. Imbued with fondness and familiarity, these memories oftentimes seem surreal and distant. Growing up in America as a 1.5 generation immigrant, learning to navigate the liminality of my cultural identity has been a slow, gradual, and still ongoing process. This is true for many children of immigrants. Embracing idiosyncrasy in the building and nurturing of our roots enables us to find our place within the worlds to which we belong. Borrowed Memories is a celebration of the stories from Tondo that continue to distinguish my identity, animate my life, and influence my perceptions of the world, as well as my design. Acknowledging the presence and deep rootedness of my heritage, in all its many iterations, enables me to fully embrace the traditions, values, and love of my ‘remembered’ home in Tondo.
