Beyond Artisan Craft
The term ‘artisan’ originates back to the Middle Ages. It is defined as a person skilled in a utilitarian art, trade, or craft, especially one requiring manual skill. Many artisan crafts have been passed along for generations. On a recent trip to India, I learned about a variety of craftwork and even crafted some of my own. The experience was eye-opening. The craft that enchanted me the most was artisan wood block printing, which dates to 200 AD. Today, India is one of the largest exporters of artisan wood block print work. Beyond Artisan Craft is a contemporary take on this ancient craft, utilizing modern materials and inks, and digitizing the results to push the work ever further. It would take a considerable amount of time and training to replicate the skills of artisan wood block printers. However, the work I saw inspired this collection.
