Meji
Every region of the world has its own natural resources. Developing and adapting those resources for use in everyday life was the ingenuity and work of our ancestors, indigenous peoples who first lived on and cultivated the land. The vernacular of materials and architecture in Sub-Saharan Africa continues to utilize locally and naturally produced resources. Meji is an exploration of traditional West African stools created in a contemporary context. Objects are like narratives. They connect us to the world-at-large and to the worlds we live in and influence the relationships we have within these worlds. Meji combines the vernacular and methods of Sub-Saharan Africa with materials resourced in the Chicago area. An homage to pre-colonial methods, Meji revitalizes, preserves, and contemporizes the Sub-Saharan vernacular.
